Your cozy west coast cocoon awaits

By Erin Linn McMullan

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass

but about learning how to dance in the rain.

In winterlight at low tide, the sand on tinwis beach glistens like glass, a mirror reflecting the wide blue sky. Beyond the rocky headlands, the azure Pacific stretches infinite towards the horizon. Quiescence in this sunny interlude between storms and life-giving rain.

Magic hour soon infuses this marinescape with a golden glow making it luminous. A prelude to a show stopping west coast sunset ephemeral across sky and sea. Only an archipelago within Clayoquot Sound silhouetted against vibrant indigo, scarlet, and gold and sheltering načiqs (Tofino) between here, home to the Nuučaanuł Peoples since time immemorial, and Japan.

This February, wrap yourself up in a cozy coastal cocoon and indulge all your senses with west coast winter wonder.

As twilight tiptoes in, incandescent lights beckon from oceanfront Tin Wis Resort, an Original Original and Authentic Indigenous, nestled in the rainforest beneath a backdrop of snow-capped Insular Mountains. Beachfront bonfires flicker to life from the resort’s clay fire pits on the dunes.

tinwis invites you to linger here on the beach longer.

That last stripe of raspberry sunset dissolves into charcoal night as you trek out to the rocks across the ribbed sand, your headlamp bobbing with your footsteps, and illuminating tidal pools alive with marine life. Pulsating green sea anemone and a constellation of sea stars luminescent in seawater sparkling under this pocket of light. A glimpse into an aquatic multiverse.

Early the next morning, stormlight breaks through the łiw̓aḥmis (clouds) and the Pacific now pours over those same rocks you explored last night like a cauldron with the King tide. A mesmerizing spectacle as surfers and paddle boarders play in the waves. As the ocean surges in sea foam washes over your boots.

Ready to brave those exhilarating elements? Pull on your winter wetsuit, grab your board, and jump in!

Vitamin Sea

Vitamin Sea rejuvenates body and soul, making Tin Wis an idyllic oasis whether you’re here for a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway or family bonding during BC Family Day’s (Feb. 16) long weekend.

“The sunsets are incredible and it’s romantic as hell,” says Catherine Bruhwiler, Tofino Paddle Surf, “plus we get some beautiful sunshine when everyone else is socked in and freezing.”

Share a private surf lesson and surf stoke or recharge with a hydrotherapy circuit at the beachfront Nordic spa (adults only).

“Just 10 minutes in one session in the sauna or one cold plunge and you’re all smiles,” enthuses Tuff City Sauna’s Jordan Hanthorn. Sauna culture is being rediscovered, he explains, because this low-impact restorative process “supercharges all of your regenerative processes in your body”, releasing dopamine and serotonin in a way that’s hard to replicate outside a hard gym regimen.

Even the two-storey Fitness Centre overlooks the sea with an unbeatable front-row seat from its outdoor hot tub for prime surf and sunset viewing.

Active play

What can you do in načiqs (Tofino) in winter?

The Indigenous co-managed Pacific Rim National Park Reserve offers access to over 22 kms of beaches, including world-renowned Long Beach, and 12 kms of hiking trails. In wiiqsi?is (stormy weather), two rainforest trails provide a natural umbrella with their overhead canopy as you follow the boardwalk deeper into the forest’s embrace, reveling in the scent of ḥumiis (cedar) and petrichor rising through misty understory.

For avid storm watchers and photographers, discover the spectacular vantage point on the deck of Kwisitis Visitor Centre, perched high above Wickaninnish Beach. Experience that electric dance as ionized air raises goosebumps on your skin and a west coast storm blurs the boundaries between hiłaayił (sky), sea, and sand.

Within walking distance of the resort, you can also visit n̓an̓aquuʔa (Chesterman Beach), one of the top 10 beaches cross-country, whose tombolo connects its north and south beaches at low tide. Pop by Chocolate Tofino for hot chocolate elixir or handmade gelato on the way home.

Plan to check trail conditions and tides, especially with winter’s dramatic King Tides, ahead.

Family fun

Embrace your family’s free time with activities for all ages from our beachfront playground to Tuff City Skate Park downtown to indoor fun with our youth games basket filled with playing cards, UNO, and Jenga (ask at reception).

Comfort Food

Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner à deux or a family gathering full of laughter, Tofino Browns Socialhouse offers comfort food (and a secret kids’ menu) in a stunning setting overlooking the Pacific.

The panoramic view from their heated patio is perfect for sky watching whether it’s spectacular storms, stargazing, or with luck and peak solar flare activity, Aurora Borealis dancing across the stratosphere. Winter’s dark skies showcase phenomenal magic from the full Snow Moon ushering in February (Feb. 1) to the new moon mid-month (Feb. 17), Orion’s increased visibility, and a remarkable planetary parade (Feb. 28), featuring Mercury, Venus, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus, and Jupiter.

For midwinter magic, make Tin Wis Resort your home-away-from-home, here within Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks.
