5 BREATHTAKING WAYS TO CONNECT WITH THE OCEAN

We invite you to connect more deeply with the Pacific Ocean in 2025. This west coast marinescape has been stewarded by Nuu-chah-nulth Peoples since time immemorial. Clayoquot Sound is now protected by Indigenous-led conservancies over 76,000 hectares and a new ḥačxwiqaq (Deep Ocean) Tribal Park was declared last year. From bucket list adventures to learning more about these lands and waters, dive into these 5 unforgettable ocean experiences:

COLD PLUNGE AND SAUNA

Combined heat and cold therapy — with a plunge in the Pacific — adds that west coast twist to Tuff City Saunas‘ newest and largest Nordic spa onsite at Tin Wis. Its centrepiece is a stove imported from Finland and an opportunity to share sauna culture and conversation amidst postcard views. From bliss to health benefits, this bucket list experience invites you to embrace your vulnerability and engage with these west coast environs in a deeper and more meaningful way.

WINTER SURF SPOTS

In winter with more extreme and King tides, the protected cove of Tin̓uwis becomes a natural playground for surfing and saltwater kayaks available for rental onsite via Tofino Paddle Surf. For epic coldwater surf, Chesterman Beach and Č ̓aḥayis (Cox Bay) are local favourites for experienced surfers as well as C̓ašiiwa (Incinerator Rock) on Long Beach and qaanimč̓a (Flo Bay) in the co-managed Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Ask for pro tips and coaching and instruction from the experienced local team at Tofino Paddle Surf.

CO-MANAGED PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK RESERVE

Witness the magnificence of the ocean firsthand in the co-managed Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. With winter waves up to 20 feet, that heart-pounding surf and salt air are exhilarating whether you’re watching from the panoramic deck at Kwisitis Visitor Centre, exploring the long white sand beaches at low tide or surfing its breaks. Enjoy watching the sea lions frolic offshore at Sea Lion Rocks and shorebirds undulating like ripples across the sand.

Visit with respect and check tide, trail, and surf conditions ahead.

TOFINO HOT SPRINGS ECO-TOUR

Luxuriate under a waterfall in the soothing oceanfront pools at Mux̣šiƛa Hot Springs at Nism̓aakqin in the Ahousaht haḥuułii. Experience Clayoquot Sound with knowledgeable guides on this daytrip with award-winning Ahous Adventures, an Original Original and Authentic Indigenous. Listen to master storytelling as your guide shares Ahousaht culture, history, and a deep relationship with whales and other marine life from sea otters and pinnipeds to Pelagic seabirds. Bring your camera but don’t miss the magic in the moment. Exclusive morning and evening access year-round (conditions permitting).

ḥačxwiqaq (DEEP OCEAN) TRIBAL PARK

The declaration of the ḥačxwiqaq (Deep Ocean) Tribal Park last June represents a new milestone, asserting Tla-o-qui-aht’s stewardship vision across the entire marine and terrestrial components of the ḥaḥuułi. This fifth ocean-based Tribal Park was declared in English and Tla-o-qui-aht on the 40th anniversary of the declaration of wanačas hiłhuuʔis (Meares Island Tribal Park) and joins Ha` uukmin Tribal Park (Kennedy Lake and Clayoquot Lake watersheds), Tranquil Tribal Park (Tranquil and Tofino Watersheds), and Esowista Tribal Park.
